Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is Mid-Michigan Recycling?
Mid-Michigan Recycling (MMR) is a wood waste recycling company; it has been in business since 1993, specializing in receiving, transporting, processing and recycling wood waste to conserve our state’s natural resources and improve our environment. MMR operates multiple wood-waste recovery yards in southern Michigan and is an authorized Michigan Department of Environmental Quality wood waste recycling company. MMR classifies wood waste for its highest value use. The wood waste is then reused in its original form or processed and recycled into the appropriate market.

2. What is wood waste?
Wood waste is wood that no longer has value at its current location, it may be a waste product of a process, it may be from shipping/receiving, it may be from construction or de-construction, etc. It is produced by manufacturing, forestry, construction, de-construction sectors, municipalities and utilities. MMR offers convenient and economical methods to recycle/dispose of a diverse array of wood-waste products ranging from sawdust to entire trees, including pallets/skids, crates, wire reels, scrap wood, sawdust, shavings, milling residue, processed wood, cutoffs, trees, branches, brush, stumps and bark.

3. Why should wood waste be recycled rather than just land filled?
If land filled, wood waste takes up valuable space reducing short and long term space for materials that require burial. By recycling, rather than land filling, wood waste to its best use, it saves our state’s wood natural resource.

4. How does MMR recycle wood waste?
MMR recycles wood waste through several alternative environmentally sound uses. Customers can recycle of their wood waste at one of MMR’s recovery yards, or, for greater convenience, MMR offers customized pickup and transportation services in addition to a wide network of contract wood-hauling services and specially designed trailers and equipment. The wood waste is then sorted for highest value use.

5. What are the uses for wood waste after it has been recycled?
Wood waste may be used in its original form for lumber, pallets, etc, or chipped or ground into suitable sizes for a variety of specialty product markets such as landscape material, playground material, animal bedding, etc. Residual wood waste material is recycled at the Genesee Power Station for the generation of “green power” used by the residents of Michigan.

6. Why is it important for manufacturers to recycle their wood waste to MMR versus a landfill?
MMR recycles more than 1.5 million cubic yards of wood waste annually. By recycling wood waste to its highest value use, it becomes less wasteful, helping to preserve trees, one of our natural resources. This, in turn, protects wildlife habitat, reduces soil erosion and helps maintain air quality. Furthermore, proper recycling of wood waste results in reductions in the generation of greenhouse gases emitted in our atmosphere.

7. How does MMR work with a company’s current waste vendor?
Companies today are environmentally conscious and have established goals with their waste vendors to maximize waste recycling (and minimize land filling). With that in mind, MMR becomes one of many recycling companies all contributing towards reaching the goal of total recycling of waste materials.

8. What are a company’s responsibilities as a customer to MMR?
The biggest thing companies can do to help recycle is to properly separate their wood waste from other wastes such as plastics, paper, etc. MMR has pickers and can perform this separation task, but it is more cost effective performed at the source.
