Renewable/Alternate Fuels

Horse Bedding Disposal
In 2007, MMR became the only business approved by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality to haul and recycle soiled horse bedding. We pick up and transport used bedding to the Genesee Power Station (GPS), a facility located in Flint fueled by wood waste that generates “green power” for you and your neighbors.

GPS utilizes state of the art technology to cleanly burn horse bedding, creating steam and then green electricity for over 28,000 homes in SE Michigan.

One truckload of used wood based horse bedding can produce enough electricity for about 32 homes for one month.

Mid-Michigan Recycling Expands Alternative Fuel Program
In support of the State of Michigan’s commitment to expand the use of alternative energy sources for the generation of electrical power, Mid-Michigan Recycling (MMR) has implemented a new cost incentive program for horse owners that will make recycling of used wood-based horse bedding a viable alternative for many more equine operations.

Recycling costs for wood-based horse bedding have been eliminated or reduced by 50%. This cost incentive program is designed to reduce the cost to horse owners to increase participation by horse farms. Your participation can help sustain this pricing.

How the Free and Reduced Cost Recycling Program for wood-based horse bedding works:

  1. Pre-inspection of the bedding by MMR is required. A truckload quantity is also required for program eligibility. MMR trucks carry 130 cubic yard loads at 34 tons maximum weight. Decomposed bedding is not eligible for this program.

  2. MMR provides labor and equipment to load your used wood based horse bedding into 130 cubic yard chip vans at no cost to you; saving you both time and labor.

  3. Farms within a truck route of 45 miles to the Genesee Power Station (GPS) in Flint, Michigan are eligible for 100% FREE recycling of their eligible bedding.

  4. Farms between 46 and 100 miles from GPS are eligible for a 50% reduction in their total cost for recycling as listed in the table to the right.

  5. Please call (810) 955-7976 to schedule an appointment.

Did You Know?
About 48,000 of Michigan’s 155,000 horses are stalled using wood based recyclable bedding products.

Many equine owners do not have enough land to spread their used bedding at proper agronomic rates.

Recycling wood waste into electricity reduces dependency on fossil fuels for power generation and reduces green house gases.
